Lunch & Learn: What’s in a Name?
Learn how names allow us to trace plant origins and characteristics and inform how botanists and gardeners engage with plants, and why the words we choose change what we notice in the landscape.
Saturday, Febraury 27, 2027, 10:00 - 2:30PM
Hone your herbarium specimen mounting skills under the guidance of expert instructor Roberta Lombardi, Herbarium Collections Manager at UMass Amherst. This hands-on workshop will open with a short presentation and demonstration of different methods used to mount specimens. Participants will then have the opportunity to engage in supervised practice of these methods, using glue plates and other materials to mount specimens from Native Plant Trust’s own herbarium. This workshop is suitable for any student who has an interest in learning more about hands-on work with flora of the Northeast, including new and experienced herbarium volunteers, gardeners, amateur botanists, and more. Some experience working with herbarium specimens is helpful but not required. Participants are welcome to bring food to enjoy during this workshop’s half-hour lunch break.
