Lunch & Learn: What’s in a Name?
Learn how names allow us to trace plant origins and characteristics and inform how botanists and gardeners engage with plants, and why the words we choose change what we notice in the landscape.
Discover all the native and a number of the introduced members of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) that grow in natural habitats in New England. Immerse yourself in this varied and strikingly beautiful group of wildflowers as you engage in an interactive presentation and study herbarium specimens. In addition to the ‘true’ buttercups (Ranaunculus), buttercup family genera that will be discussed include baneberry (Actaea), columbine (Aquilegia), anemone (Anemone), marsh marigold (Caltha), clematis (Clematis), goldenseal (Hydrastis), meadow rue (Thalictrum) and globeflower (Trollius).
